Opinion: It is important to prepare for Easter spiritually

MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) – Easter traditions such as blessing eggs should not substitute spiritual preparation and cleansing through confession, Metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev, Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz told journalists at a press conference.

“Unfortunately, a lot of people presume that blessing Easter dishes is enough to celebrate Easter. But they are wrong. Blessing eggs is a good tradition as the egg is a symbol of new life. We should preserve this tradition. It is joyous to see parents who bring their children to the church to bless Easter dishes,” Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz said.

However, this is not the end of the celebration. There is still a church service with the culmination – the Eucharist rite. “This requires spiritual readiness. So people should cleanse themselves from sins,” Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz noted. He called catholics who have not yet confessed to do so.

Easter is the main celebration in Christianity. Catholics are preparing for it during the whole Great Lent. Catholic churches hold special services, recollections, deliver special sermons.

At the request from the journalists, Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz commented on the fire in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. “This is a great tragedy. I would like to express my sympathy to the French people,” the metropolitan said. “The catholics of Belarus are praying  and call on everyone to pray for the speedy restoration of this sacred building. It should remain not only a place that attracts tourists but also a place where man meets God,” he added.
