Opinion: Belarus’ progress on SDGs is due to smart government policy

MINSK, 3 March (BelTA) – Anatoly Isachenko, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic and National Coordinator for the Sustainable Development Goals has held talks with senior officials of the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Hungary and the Office of the National SDG Coordinator of Hungary, BelTA learned from the press service of the upper house of the Belarusian parliament.

The parties reviewed progress on the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, including the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation under the SDGs.
 
“The policy Belarus is implementing today and the strategy towards building a strong state in the interests of people chosen by Belarusians a quarter of a century ago, helped Belarus advance to the 18th place in the SDG Index,” Anatoly Isachenko said.

He stressed that the priorities approved by the Belarusian People’s Congress for the next five years are in line with the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Anatoly Isachenko reiterated Belarus’ commitment to key principles of sustainable development.

In turn, the Hungarian side welcomed Belarus’ progress in achieving the SDGs at the regional level. They also praised the creation of a successful national architecture for managing sustainable development processes.

“We are ready to maintain an equitable dialogue with our foreign partners, but this communication should be based on respect for Belarusian people, their right to self-determination, our history, traditions and culture,” Anatoly Isachenko emphasized.
