NOC: Belarus can book 100 Tokyo Olympics berths

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – Belarusian athletes have won 71 Tokyo Olympics berths, and there is still time to get more qualifications, First Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus Viktor Lukashenko said at a working meeting held in Minsk on 17 November to discuss the preparations for the 32rd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo and the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, BelTA has learned.

Every athlete dreams of taking part in the Olympics and winning a medal, it is the most cherished dream of all athletes, said the NOC first vice president. The Tokyo Games are just some six months away, so now it is necessary to make quick decisions on the preparations for the games taking into account the situation with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Summer Olympics will be held in the Japanese capital from 23 July to 8 August 2021. Belarusian athletes have already won 71 berths in 15 sports. By the end of the Olympic qualifying period (June 2021) the Belarusians may secure over 100 berths in total.

Attending the meeting was Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko, Sports and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk, heads of 37 sports federations and Olympic training centers, athletes and coaches.

Belarus has won a total of 96 medals at the Olympic Games.

More than 38,000 specialists are employed in the sport industry in Belarus. There are 23,232 physical culture and sports facilities. More than 2.3 million people do sports in Belarus. About 3,500 sports events are held every year.
