MP: European Parliament's recommendations are directed against people of Belarus

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) -  The actions proposed in the European Parliament's recommendations are directed against the people of Belarus, Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh said as he commented on the European Parliament's recommendations on the relations with Belarus to the European Council, the European Commission and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

“It is with regret that we have to note that the recommendations of the European Parliament on the relations with Belarus continue the futile policy to create new obstacles towards normalization of relations between Belarus and the European Union. We see this document as an example of preposterous and biased politicking bordering on interference in the internal affairs of the country.   Calls to widen restrictive measures against Belarus, as well as proposed restrictions on access to the EU market of certain categories of goods from Belarus are a blatant attempt to exert economic pressure on a sovereign state, which violates international legislation,” Andrei Savinykh noted.

The MP noted with regret that even regional cooperation in the fight against COVID-19 is the target of the European Parliament's attack. “We see that all the actions proposed in the recommendations are directed primarily against the people of Belarus. They aim to harm the maximum number of Belarusian citizens. The European Parliament’s attempts to form a false impression of the alleged military threats coming from Belarus are particularly deeply regrettable. In the light of the inappropriate actions by the European Parliament, we state openly that Belarus’ foreign policy is based on the principle of peace and aims to form a zone of stability and security in the region,” he noted.

Andrei Savinykh stressed that Belarus will develop relations with all international partners, based on its national interests and without instructions from abroad. “We will continue the policy to promote sustainable economic development of our country and protect the well-being of Belarusian citizens. We call on the sound political and social forces of the European Union to abandon the policy of diktat and pressure and to return to the policy of good neighborliness and respect for national sovereignty. We will see such actions as a recognition of the value of developing Europe without dividing lines,” Andrei Savinykh said.
