MOGILEV, 11 October (BelTA) - Innovations in the livestock sector will shore up the economic and food security of the Union Belarus-Russia Union State, Belarus Agriculture and Food Minister Leonid Zayats said as he addressed the panel discussion “Agrarian policy of the Union State: Experience, problems and prospects” at the 5th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia in Mogilev, BelTA has learned.
The minister suggested the breeding-genetic centers should develop common pedigree resources of the Union State.
“We have solid scientific base, considerable practical experience of collaborating on breeding work, dairy cattle and pig breeding, poultry farming, and fodder production. Yet we still use mainly foreign breeding products and technologies. Our scientists and farmers can create a domestic breeding product. Thus we will be able to save on foreign currency and reduce dependence on imports of breeding products,” Leonid Zayats said.
The need to establish breeding-genetic centers has been confirmed by the relevant decrees of the presidents of both countries, government resolutions and government programs.
