Minister: Belarusian athletes preparing for Tokyo Olympic Games in routine mode

MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) - Belarusian athletes are preparing for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in a routine mode, Belarus’ Sport and Tourism Minister Sergei Kovalchuk told reporters in Minsk on 19 March, BelTA has learned.

“No decision to cancel the Tokyo Olympics has been made. Belarusian athletes are preparing for the Games in a routine mode. So are athletes from other countries,” Sergei Kovalchuk said.

According to him, 404 Belarusian athletes are currently abroad for training camps. Gradually they will be returning home. Upon arrival, all athletes will go through the activities recommended by the Healthcare Ministry.

The 32nd Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo are scheduled to take place from 24 July to 9 August. The Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony was held in Greece on 19 March, at the Panathenaic Stadium where the first Modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. Due to the recommendations over the COVID-19 outbreak, the ceremony was held in a modest atmosphere without guests, spectators and a large number of journalists.
