ST PETERSBURG, 17 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia should bring in relevant projects while implementing the Union State Foundation Treaty, Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko said as she met with Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich on 17 July, BelTA has learned.
Valentina Matviyenko recalled that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Union State Foundation Treaty and it is time to take stock of the progress made. In her words, it is important to flesh the document out, to think of new projects, so that the treaty can meet new challenges and take advantage of new opportunities.
She added that the analysis of the achievements of the Union State of Belarus and Russia over these 20 years suggests the following: in order to deepen cooperation in economy and manufacturing, the parties need to synchronize their steps in order to harmonize the legislation taking into consideration new requirements. The laws should be somewhat unified, so that the business community will be able to know common rules of the game and remove existing barriers together with MPs, the Russian speaker noted. “MPs can make a meaningful contribution to it,” Valentina Matviyenko said.
The heads of state set the pace in bilateral relations. They determine the agenda of integration processes, the speaker emphasized. She noted that arising issues are addressed in a routine mode. Regions also play their part in strengthening bilateral relations.
Now contacts with Belarusian regions are maintained by 80 Russian regions. The Russian speaker positively assessed cooperation results: new joint projects emerge, cooperation in the manufacturing sector is expanding. Valentina Matviyenko expressed confidence that the forum of regions will be conducted at a very high level and will yield good results.
