Matviyenko: Belarus, Russia venerate those who died to defeat Nazis

MOGILEV, 12 October (BelTA) – Belarus and Russia hold sacred the memories of those who gave their lives fighting against fascism, Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Russian Federal Assembly Valentina Matviyenko told reporters during a briefing at the 5th Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia on 12 October, BelTA has learned.

“Russia and Belarus have the same attitudes to this matter. We cherish the memories of those who died fighting against fascism. I am convinced that our Belarusian partners will uphold the initiative of the Federation Council to declare the Victory over fascism world heritage,” she said.

Valentina Matviyenko noted that one should approach the United Nations and prepare a relevant resolution on recognizing the Victory over fascism world heritage and declaring the monuments to those who died fighting against Nazism in all countries a global memorial.

“It is getting increasingly relevant today when Nazis are raising their heads in some European countries. We see again torchlight processions with Nazi symbols, attempts to celebrate fascists’ henchmen, to re-write the history of the Second World War, to downplay the feat of the multi-ethnic Soviet nation. We, Russians and Belarusians, cannot accept it, we cannot let it happen; we realize that measures should be taken to prevent the spread of such phenomena,” Valentina Matviyenko said.
