MINSK, 11 July (BelTA) – Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei attended the first screening of the Defiance movie about the partisan unit led by the Bielski brothers which operated on the territory of Novogrudok District during the Great Patriotic War. The screening was organized with the support of the Embassy of the United States in Belarus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his opening remarks Vladimir Makei noted that during the Second World War, the Jews were not only victims but also warriors, partisans and underground movement members, heroes who fought with weapons in their hands against the extermination of their people and other peoples. The partisan unit led by the Bielski brothers became one of the most striking and famous examples of the fight of the Jews against the invaders on the territory of Belarus.
The youngest of the brothers, Aron Bielski was the guest of honor of the screening.
