Makei: Belarus concerned over intensified international terrorist activity

MINSK, 19 November (BelTA) - Belarus is concerned over intensified international terrorist activity, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said following a meeting with Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany, which took place in Berlin on 18 November, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belarus.

Vladimir Makei noted that his visit took place when the already tense international political situation aggravated.

"Belarus is also concerned over intensified international terrorist activity which manifested itself in the heinous terror acts in Paris," said the head of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Vladimir Makei noted that there are a lot of important issues that the European Union is currently busy with. These are the terror attacks, the economic difficulties, the crisis in Ukraine and other regions. In that connection, he asked his German counterpart to make sure that Belarus-related issues are not put on the back burner.

Talking about the Ukrainian crisis, the Minister noted that this represents a real threat to the security of the entire region. "Our attitude to the Ukrainian crisis was clear from the very beginning. Our President talked about it many times. We would like to see peace restored in Ukraine as soon as possible. We have always stood for the unity, for Ukraine to remain as a unified state,” "he said.

"We are three Slavic peoples: Ukrainians, Russians and Belarusians. When two sibling squabble, the third one must be ready to interfere and help them make peace. We have always done everything possible for peace to be restored on the Ukrainian soil. You know that we have agreed to host the OSCE contact group in Minsk, and it meets regularly. We keep in close contact with Russians and with Ukrainians and try to do everything possible, at the formal and informal levels, to help restore the stability and calm in Ukraine,” said the head of the Belarusian Minsitry of Foreign Affairs.
