MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) – People should be able to defend their right to independently shape their country’s future, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with the MPs of the House of Representatives and members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the seventh convocation on 21 March, BelTA has learned.
“The great work done by the parliamentarians to defend the historical truth should be viewed as part of the efforts to strengthen national security. You were serving your term in parliament at the historical period when the formation of self-identity, the preservation of traditional values and the truth about Belarus’ history, primarily the Great Patriotic War period, were gaining on new significance. We clearly realized that it was not enough to win. We had to learn how to defend this victory and the right to independently shape our future, including at the legislative level,” the head of state said.
Therefore, new landmark laws have been adopted, including laws on preventing the rehabilitation of Nazism, which combats this criminal phenomenon on multiple levels.
“The law on the genocide of the Belarusian people was introduced into domestic legislation,” noted Aleksandr Lukashenko. According to him, this document was a response to attempts to make us forget our history, break the connection between generations and undermine our society from the inside. “Responsibility has been strengthened for memory-holing, imposing alien values on Belarusians, and betraying those who died for the peaceful and calm life of modern generations,” the president emphasized.
