VITEBSK, 16 July (BelTA) – Belarus’ destiny should be determined exclusively by its citizens, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he inspected the 103rd Independent Guards Airborne Brigade in Vitebsk on 16 July, BelTA has learned.
“We are a young, sovereign and independent state. We gained this independence without blood and maybe without sweat. A fierce fight between Yeltsin and Gorbachev in the Kremlin was going on back then. Many of us, virtually the entire country, were watching what was going to happen. In other words, we were probably one of the key stakeholders in that state, but we could not influence the situation and the decision-making process back then,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
“When I say it (this is very important in the pre-election period) I always ask people to keep it in mind. Our destiny is in our own hands. Our future should be determined by us, here in Belarus,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
