MINSK, 4 March (BelTA) - The new Constitution is a people's document, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said at a solemn ceremony at the Palace of Independence where he signed the Decision of the national constitutional referendum on 4 March, BelTA has learned.
The head of state noted that under the auspices of the Constitutional Court, tremendous work was done to amend the Basic Law, as openly and democratically as possible, as was promised. The Constitutional Commission, which included MPs, representatives of local structures, culture and sport, and leading scientists did a great job, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized.
"They carefully analyzed all the initiatives, formalized them in the draft Constitution. Then we passed the prepared changes through a filter of specialists, experts," the president recalled. “All in all, more than a million Belarusians participated in the work and discussion. As a result, we received about 10,000 comments from people, a lot of rational proposals, some of which were reflected in the updated articles of the Constitution."
According to the head of state, initiatives that are not constitutional in nature will be taken into account as other laws are improved and adopted in the furtherance of the Constitution.
"Without exaggeration, the new edition is a people's document. It is not surprising that people supported it," the Belarusian leader said.
