Lukashenko: New Constitution draft is a Constitution of the future

LUNINETS, 21 January (BelTA) – The new Belarus Constitution draft submitted to referendum is a Constitution of the future, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told reporters on 21 January, BelTA has learned.
“I am sure that what we are proposing, what I have proposed to the people - the Constitution draft - is a Constitution of the future. The most important thing is that we must learn to strictly abide by the law without veering left or right in the coming two or three years. Then there will be no dual power,” the head of state said.
Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that in this case all bodies and branches of power will do their job, including the president, the Belarusian People’s Congress, the government, and the parliament.
“Yet, everyone is worried about a possibility of clashes in higher echelons of power (as this would instantly spiral down to affect the entire society). To prevent this, one needs to learn to live by the law. Everyone should mind their own business and not meddle in other people’s affairs. I am sure that we will succeed. And we will take a huge step towards real democracy, where the people will decide on a referendum how to live, and we, the servants of the people, will fulfill their will. This is the essence of democracy. Therefore, I believe in good prospects of this document, the country’s fundamental law. It should be firmly established in our minds and incorporated into our daily life through laws, by-laws. We will do this,” the president said.
The head of state admitted that he is worried how everything will be implemented: “Again, I am responsible for this all. Therefore, I am afraid of and try to avoid all sorts of accidents, if I may put it this way. Although there are no accidents in global politics, anything can happen: we will go the wrong way, or the wrong people will come to power. Of course, I am worried about it.”
