MINSK, 15 August (BelTA) - The international situation remains unprecedentedly tense, with all kinds of challenges and threats becoming more acute, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said in his greetings to the participants of the 11th Moscow Conference on International Security, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.
“Over the past decade such meetings and communication in the format of multilateral dialogue on priority areas of global and regional security have become very much in demand and relevant. They give an opportunity to exchange professional opinions, comprehensively assess the situation in all regions of the globe, compare the agenda on key issues of peace preservation,” the president said. “The current international situation remains unprecedentedly tense. Practically all known challenges and threats have become more acute. International law on arms control has been discredited. The risks of the use of weapons of mass destruction, including provocations using nuclear and biological means of destruction, are growing.”
The head of state stressed that information wars and cybercrime have become a powerful factor of economic and national instability for all states without exception.
Today, various kinds of restrictive measures and sanctions are a new type of weapons undermining the system of international trade and economic ties, which have turned from a tool to enforce peace and security into a complex threat of global scale.
“In this context, remaining a consistent supporter of ensuring peace and security, fulfilling its earlier international commitments, the Republic of Belarus, together with its partners and within the framework of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, is making every effort to strengthen cooperation in combating transnational challenges and threats of various kinds. By deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, we are adequately responding to the accelerated militarization of Eastern Europe and the growing military activity of the United States and NATO. At the same time, this does not cancel the peace initiatives put forward by the Belarusian side in the interests of restarting the dialog on European and global security on equal terms for the benefit of the whole planet - our common home,” the Belarusian leader emphasized.
Addressing the participants of the conference, Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed confidence that the ongoing meeting in Moscow would serve strengthening cooperation between the states and peoples and become a significant stage on the way to building a new system of international security.
