Lukashenko: Grassroots democracy is the most important instrument for making key decisions

MINSK, 23 June (BelTA) – Grassroots democracy is the most important instrument for making fateful decisions in Belarus. Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko made the statement in the concluding speech of the fifth Belarusian People’s Congress on 23 June, BelTA has learned.

“The forum has obviously demonstrated that grassroots democracy is the most important instrument for making fateful decisions in Belarus. I have liked very much your businesslike attitude to work coupled with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the congress,” stressed the President.

“I felt how the delegates shouldered their responsibility for making the decisions that determine the future of the society and the state. I would like to thank all the delegates for support, understanding, and for taking an active part in the development and adoption of program documents. You and I have discussed all the aspects of the most important problems in our life, have summed up results during the most representative forum of the country, and have given a self-critical evaluation of what was done in the previous five-year term. We have adopted a long-term strategy for developing the country as well as program documents for the next five years. We have worked out the main guidelines for the innovation-driven renewal of Belarus, for modernizing the economy taking into account new world tendencies,” noted Alexander Lukashenko.

“I was looking at former leaders of our country — to tell the truth, there is no such thing as former leaders of a nation — and at leaders of the Soviet period and wondered whether they ever contemplated that such reports and speeches would ever be made in such a representative hall during an event that looks so much like a congress of the communist party with words and terms that are complicated to grasp. It demonstrates how far our Belarus has advanced within one generation. It indicates how fast the entire world and the world economy advance,” said the head of state.

Alexander Lukashenko stressed that prospects of forming high-tech businesses focusing on investments and new administration systems had been determined in Belarus. “All of it has been done to ensure the steady increase in living standards of our people, the dynamic development of the Belarusian state and its stronger positions in the international community,” concluded the President.
