MINSK, 26 August (BelTA) – I view U.S President Donald Trump as an extraordinary politician, although I do not agree with everything he does, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.
The head of state said that the relations with the United States and the processes taking place in that country were discussed during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi on 22 August. “I initiated the discussion. I asked my counterpart about what was happening from their, Russia’s, point of view in the United States of America. I was interested in the issue especially because of the fact, and I do not hide it, that I rooted for Donald Trump during the election campaign in the United States,” the Belarusian leader said.
“Donald Trump is a truly pro-American leader, for the majority of the society. However, someone in the elite does not like it. Unfortunately, the society is split into two parts there. Both democrats and republicans split the U.S. society in half. In the United States of America, a large part of the society supports Donald Trump. But the elite, some part of it, especially the democratic one, does not like Trump's behavior. Yes, he is an extraordinary politician,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
“I do not support him in everything. I do not know everything, either. Of course, some matters are hidden from all of us, including me, but to fight against the whole world, including in trade, is probably a wrong thing to do. I would like to repeat, however, that we do not know everything what is going on there,” the Belarusian head of state said.
Alexander Lukashenko said that if Donald Trump moves away from this harsh rhetoric, “he will win a lot for the United States of America. “He has recently said, however: “If I am impeached, everybody would be poor.” What impeachment? We must work and fight for our ideas,” said the Belarusian president.
He added that a lot of unclear things both for ordinary people and politicians are taking place in the United States. “We paid much attention to discussing these issues in the context of Russian-American relations and, of course, their impact on Belarus. I am grateful to President Putin for the expressed point of view on the situation in the world, and the United States of America in particular,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
