Lukashenko cautions government against misreporting, lying

MINSK, 20 October (BelTA) – The government must not misrepresent information about the state of affairs in various areas. Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko made the statement during the government conference held on 20 October to discuss the improvement of the system of planning and overseeing the implementation of strategic projects, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said: “After we make a decision, we don’t always implement it. But my biggest worry of late (I’ve already talked about it) is when our government starts lying and misinforming the president instead of taking care of concrete things. In order to present itself in the best light.”

The president went on saying: “I don’t want to cite examples in public but in private I am going to give you an example that vividly testifies that lying is still a thing. And we shouldn’t get surprised that loss of cattle statistics is misreported in Gomel Oblast, in Vitebsk Oblast, in Mogilev Oblast. All over the country actually… Why should we get surprised if this practice originates with our ministers, our oblast governors? It is inadmissible.”

The president stressed that the emergence of such situations is an extreme case.

“I am not saying it is a tradition. But I am afraid that lying may become a tradition in Belarus. We will not hold on to the country if we look into a crooked mirror. And we will not give it new impulses whatever strategic plans we may have,” Aleksandr Lukashenko stated.
