MINSK, 30 March (BelTA) – Belarus is successfully weathering the sanctions and outside pressure, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told reporters, BelTA has learned.

“For the CIS Executive Committee that is headquartered in Minsk and that receives all possible assistance and support from the leadership of Belarus, the stability, peace and tranquility in Belarus and its progressive development are very important. We see that Belarus is withstanding the outside pressure and the sanctions imposed against it and the Russian Federation. The economy is functioning, people have jobs,” Sergei Lebedev said.

“We are happy that our Belarusian friends are successfully resisting this ungrounded and, frankly speaking, not really smart sanctions that affect not only the Belarusian economy, but also the economies of European countries. These sanctions have backfired on them,” CIS Secretary General said.

A joint meeting of the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the CIS Member Nations at the Statutory and other Bodies of the Commonwealth and the Commission on Economic Affairs under the CIS Economic Council is taking place at the CIS Executive Committee headquarters in Minsk on 30 March.

The participants have eight talking points: a draft agenda for the next meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council, preparations for the next meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council, a roadmap to implement the initiatives of the heads of delegations voiced during meetings of the CIS Heads of State Council, the CIS Heads of Government Council, the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Economic Council.
