MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Playing host to a plenary session of the Council of the Bishops’ Conferences of Europe is a big honor and great responsibility for Belarus, Metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev of the Roman Catholic Church in Belarus, Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz told the media on 11 April, BelTA has learned.
“It is a big honor for the Catholic church and the country which is to host such a large-scale forum,” said the Metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev. In his words, Belarus will welcome about 50 bishops from European countries. Guests from other continents are invited as well. The main theme of the forthcoming meeting will be youth affairs.
The event will be held on 28 September – 1 October. According to Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, the program of the plenary session is under development. It is expected that the service featuring the bishops will take place in the Red Church on 28 September. The one in the church in Zolotaya Gorka will be held on 29 September, and one more in the Cathedral of Saint Virgin Mary will take place on 30 September. The participants of the forum will hold services in different cathedras of Minsk on 1 October.
Cardinal of Italy Angelo Bagnasco will hold a press conference to mark the opening of the forum.
The Council of the European Bishops' Conferences was set up in 1965, when thirteen Presidents of European Bishops' Conferences decided to found a committee aimed at developing opportunities for closer cooperation at the level of local bishops. The foundation meeting for the Council was held in Rome on 23-24 March 1971. The Council comprises 39 members – European Bishops' Conferences - and a number of other hierarchical structures. The annual plenary assembly names the place for the next plenary meeting.
