“We consider your visit as a token of the Holy See’s readiness to step up cooperation with Belarus. On my part I would like to note that the Belarus government attaches great importance to the promotion of friendly ties with the Vatican in all areas. The Vatican is a special partner for us in international relations. Unique relations of mutual understanding and trust have evolved between Belarus and the Vatican. We are grateful to the Holy See for supporting our country in the international scene,” said Andrei Kobyakov.
The Prime Minister of Belarus reminded that Catholicism is the second most popular religion in the country by the number of believers. “Pope Francis’ priorities such as fight for social justice, assistance with the international, intercultural, and interreligious dialogue are fundamental for the Belarusian state, too,” he stressed.
“Belarus pursues a socially-oriented policy. We believe that calm and stability in the country, equality of citizens, guaranteed rights to labor and recreation, free education and healthcare are real accomplishments that we are proud of,” continued the head of government. “The affinity of our approaches to handling social tasks indicates that with Pope Francis in charge Belarus-Vatican relations will stay friendly and will grow stronger.”
Andrei Kobyakov also added that Belarusian believers are looking forward to the Pope’s visit.
In turn, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin remarked that during his stay in Belarus he had been able to make sure that Belarusian people are cordial and hospitable. “I would like to convey greetings and best wishes from Pope Francis to you as well as the representatives of government agencies I have met with already,” he said.
