MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) Jin Liqun expressed confidence that Belarus would become a very good partner for the bank as he met with the media after his talks with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 5 September, BelTA has learned.
“This is my first visit to Belarus. We had very fruitful talks with the president. We discussed our partnership opportunities and the role our bank can play in the further social and economic development of the country. I am confident that Belarus will become a very good partner for our bank,” he said.
The AIIB president also held meetings in the government, talks with representatives of ministries, banks, and visited the Belarusian-Chinese industrial park Great Stone. “I would like to say that Belarusians are lucky. They have reliable authorities, a highly-motivated government, and the Belarusian people themselves are hardworking. It will be an honor for us to work with such a nation,” Jin Liqun said.
He emphasized Belarus’ strategically important location. “It is a so-called bridge between Europe and Asia, therefore the transport system and its development are becoming central to the agenda,” the AIIB head said. For this reason the bank decided to support the Lepel-Polotsk highway construction project.
Jin Liqun said that he had been impressed with his visit to the Great Stone Park. “Over just four years the park has developed into something grandiose and we also would like to do something for its development. We have initiatives and ideas which we will discuss as soon as we are back home,” he explained.
When asked on the terms for providing financial resources, the AIIB president said that they are similar to those of other international banks. “I know that Belarus has good relations with other development banks. With our bank, you will get a new partner and a new source of financing,” he added.
