Historical memory named among strategic national interests of Belarus

MINSK, 12 December (BelTA) -  Historical memory is among the strategic national interests of Belarus, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich said at the 2nd international conference dedicated to the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, BelTA learned.

“Today we see the world stability and the established system of international regional security crumble. New risks, challenges and threats to national security are emerging. We once again hear armored vehicle roaring in neighboring states; the military presence of foreign contingents is increasing,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

He emphasized that the world has again approached the edge of the abyss. “it is important that we honor history and prevent distortion of historical memory, loss of national values and sense of pride. It is important that we remember that we are descendants of the victors. This is why historical memory is among the strategic national interests of our country,” he noted.

Throughout the history, genocide has brought great losses and grief to mankind, Aleksandr Volfovich noted. The genocide during the Great Patriotic War is an open wound for Belarusians, Russians and other peoples of the Soviet Union.

“More than 83 years have passed since the treacherous attack of the Nazi invaders on our Soviet homeland. Archival data show that in the struggle for world domination Hitler and his accomplices sought to destroy the Slavic and other peoples of the Soviet Union, propagated the vile theory of their racial superiority,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

“Can we forget the cities destroyed by the enemy, burned villages, death camps, crematoria?” he asked a rhetorical question, and then emphasized that the peoples have no right to forget such things.

This is why, the popular slogans “No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten”, “For the Motherland”, “Victory Day is a sacred holiday” are the heritage of our peoples.

“Time is relentless. Unfortunately, the veterans of this terrible war are leaving us. Therefore, we are simply obliged to remember and continuously inform the entire world community about the atrocities of fascists and collaborators, the role and place of the victorious nations in the fight against the Nazis and their accomplices during the Great Patriotic War”, Aleksandr Volfovich said.
