MINSK, 12 June (BelTA) – In modern conditions it is very important to preserve the common memory about events of World War Two. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Belarus Peter Dettmar made the relevant statement during a ceremonial event held on 12 June on the occasion of the end of his diplomatic mission, BelTA has learned.
The diplomat drew attention to military matters, which are important for Belarus-Germany cooperation. He reminded that the German president came to Minsk one year ago upon the invitation of Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko in order to participate in the opening ceremony of a memorial in the Trostenets memorial complex. “The main task is to preserve the common memory about World War Two events. It is very important to keep this task a high priority,” Peter Dettmar stressed.
Peter Dettmar noted with sadness that within days he would leave Belarus, the country where he had lived and worked for eight years. It will end his diplomatic mission to Minsk and his diplomatic career of over 40 years as well. He stressed that it is unusual for a diplomat to work so long in one country yet it is very interesting. “My wife and I are grateful for the meetings and events that have happened here and for the friendly relations, which I hope will continue,” the ambassador said.
The diplomat stressed: “A lot has been accomplished in the area of Belarus-Germany bilateral relations. Some things have begun and something has not been done.” He expressed confidence in good prospects of future advancement of Belarus-Germany cooperation across the board.
Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei attended the event. He was deeply grateful to the ambassador for his work.
