MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – Belarusian ecologists show interest in the participation of European specialists in the monitoring of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), Chairman of the Board of the Belarusian public association Ecological Initiative Yuri Solovyev told a press conference on 18 October, BelTA has learned.
The joint monitoring of the construction of the nuclear power plant in Ostrovets has been conducted by ecologists from Belarus and Russia. “We hope to involve in further monitoring of the plant not only Russian but also European specialists,” Yuri Solovyev noted. For example, Belarusian ecologists are interested in the participation of representatives of Czech public organizations that possess solid experience in the oversight of nuclear power plants.
The foundation of the environmental association may create good prospects for expanding international cooperation during the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. “We have received an invitation from our Ukrainian and Belgian counterparts to set up an international association of ecologists For Nuclear Security. I think that it will be a start for a very good project. This would help expand the use of the European platforms, including for hearings in the European Parliament regarding security issues in the construction and exploitation of the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” he explained.
