BREST, 21 June (BelTA) – Brest Fortress is a symbol of the heroism of all Soviet people, First Deputy Governor of Atyrau Oblast of Kazakhstan Gumar Dyusembayev told reporters on 21 June, BelTA has learned.
“Belarus’ Brest Oblast and Brest Fortress are associated with the heroism of young people from different parts of the Soviet Union who were the first to face the unexpected attack of the Nazi army. They fought till the last shell and the last breath defending the fortress, their country and people. Many Belarusian and Kazakhstani young people took part in the battles of that war. Some 57,000 people in Atyrau Oblast left home to fight the Nazi invaders, and 25,000 of them never returned,” Gumar Dyusembayev said.
“The commemorative events in the Brest Fortress are a tribute to the memory of these heroic people, thanks to whom Belarus and Kazakhstan are sovereign nations today,” Gumar Dyusembayev added.
He stressed that participation in the events at Brest Fortress is the main goal of the visit of the delegation from Atyrau. During a meeting at the Brest Oblast Executive Committee, he handed over a letter of gratitude from Head of Atyrau Oblast of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nogayev to Editor-in-Chief of the Pravda Severa newspaper Rostislav Aliyev, the author of books about the Brest Fortress defense. Thanks to him, a large amount of information from the German archives was introduced into scientific use. Another letter of gratitude was presented to Second Secretary of the Brest City Committee of the BRSM Youth Union Piotr Pitsko, one of the organizers of the international military and historical festival “22 June.
