OSTROVETS DISTRICT, 28 March (BelTA) – The electricity the Belarusian nuclear power plant will generate will be competitive on foreign markets, BelTA learned from Belarusian Deputy Energy Minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk on 28 March.
The official pointed out that Belarus already exports electricity. It has become possible thanks to the large-scale modernization of Belarusian power plants over the course of the last few years. Once the nuclear power plant goes online, Belarusian electricity will become even more competitive, believes Mikhail Mikhadyuk.
“At present Belarusian electricity is the most effective kind in the post-Soviet space. Once the nuclear power plant goes online, it will be even more effective with regard to its prime cost,” noted Mikhail Mikhadyuk.
Speaking about possible target markets for Belarusian electricity, Mikhail Mikhadyuk said he believes the matter would be decided bearing in mind economic efficiency. “The market will decide who will buy it. We are working [on exporting Belarusian nuclear power plant electricity,]” he added.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built using the Russian standard Generation III+ design AES-2006 near Ostrovets, Grodno Oblast. The first power-generating unit is scheduled for commissioning in December 2019, with the second one to go online in July 2020.
