Call for stronger Belarus-Austria cooperation amid growing confrontation in region

MINSK, 15 January (BelTA) – It is very important for Belarus and Austria to bolster cooperation, particularly in view of the complicated situation in the world and the region. Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei made the statement as he met with Austrian Federal Minister for Europe, Integration, and Foreign Affairs Karin Kneissl, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Makei said: “Only through joint efforts one can achieve results and improve the positive atmosphere of bilateral ties. Particularly now when the situation in the world and the region is not getting better but is becoming more and more strained.” The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs expressed concern over the growing confrontation in the region.

Vladimir Makei underlined the importance of the visit: “You make history in our relations.” The diplomat reminded that in the past the then Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sebastian Kurz invited him to visit Austria when Belarus was under sanctions. “It was a bold move,” noted Vladimir Makei. “This and other positive steps of the Austrian side have contributed to our bilateral relations.”

An office of the Embassy of Austria in Belarus is about to open in Minsk today. Vladimir Makei said he was confident that on the whole Karin Kneissl’s visit would be fruitful and effective.

In turn, the Austrian federal minister for Europe, integration, and foreign affairs pointed out the importance of meetings and negotiations in Minsk, further advancement of the dialogue of Austria and Belarus.
