MINSK, 29 May (BelTA) – Belarus pursues practical interests in its cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), BelTA learned from Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei on 29 May.
The official said: “The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a dynamically developing structure with a huge political, economic, and human potential. This is why we are interested in cooperation with this organization taking into account our practical interests. We intend to develop very active interaction in all the spheres and fields this organization is involved in.”
Vladimir Makei remarked that Belarus will take an active part in the SCO summit, which is due in Qingdao, China in June.
In turn, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov pointed out that the SCO is getting stronger. “It is a multiprofile organization, which is primarily focused on stability and security, fight against new challenges and threats, and the enabling of conditions conducive to the development of economic, humanitarian, cultural, and educational cooperation,” he said.
According to the diplomat, Russia welcomes Belarus’ active involvement in the SCO’s work, including in the regional antiterrorism structure. “There is a lot of evidence that the terrorist international, which is now located in the Middle East, Syria, and Africa, has started breaking up and moving to other parts of the world out of fear of defeat. It is a matter all of us are concerned about,” stressed the Russian minister of foreign affairs.
