GOMEL, 17 June (BelTA) – There will be no price growth in connection with the forthcoming redenomination in Belarus, Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said as he met with the personnel of the confectionery factory Spartak on 17 June, BelTA has learned.
“There will be no price growth in connection with the forthcoming redenomination in Belarus. I promise you this. Heads will roll if someone will try to take advantage of this technological process (this is a purely technical event),” the President said.
Alexander Lukashenko noted that, to a certain extent, the redenomination is also a political measure especially in view of the forthcoming Belarusian People’s Congress and the parliamentary election campaign.
“When prices are recalculated (as a result of the redenomination – note by BelTA), there is a desire to increase prices slightly. But this will not happen. Everything is under control. We have agreed with the government that the prices will not be increased, even by a kopeck. If we decrease by one kopeck, people will appreciate this and say that we did well,” Alexander Lukashenko said.
Alexander Lukashenko also noted that he is not wary of inflation. “Still, we do not have much money today, and the wages do not grow fast. This holds back demand. So if a retailer raises prices, people will just stop visiting his store,” the Belarusian leader said.
