Belarus' MFA: UNESCO promotes dialogue, understanding between nations

MINSK, 17 November (BelTA) – An exhibition marking the 75th anniversary of UNESCO has opened in the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, BelTA learned from the press service of the ministry.

The event took place on 16 November, the day the UNESCO Constitution was signed. At the opening ceremony of the exposition Belarus’ Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Oleg Kravchenko said that since its establishment, UNESCO has been promoting dialogue and understanding between peoples and cultures. He outlined the important role of the Organization in solving globalization problems that humanity is facing with the help of intellectual and humanistic approach.

According to Oleg Kravchenko, Belarus attaches great importance to cooperation with the Organization and is aimed at its further development.

Addressing the participants of the event were also Director of the National History Museum Pavel Sapotko and Director General of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky.

The exhibition was prepared by the National History Museum of Belarus with the assistance of the Secretariat of the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO. The exposition reflects the history of Belarus' participation in UNESCO.

As part of the exhibition, the National Library of Belarus presented documents, books, periodicals, brochures and booklets from its collection about the history and activities of UNESCO, the main areas of cooperation between Belarus and the Organization.

In December 1957, the National Library of Belarus was granted the status of the UN depository library. The library receives on a regular basis depositary copies of various types of documents, books, materials on the activities of international organizations of the UN system. In January 2006 the library opened a hall of international organizations’ documents. The hall features a unique collection of UN publications, as well as specialized agencies and international organizations, including UNESCO.

The participants of the event had an opportunity to see commemorative coins of the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus, thematic blocks of Belpochta stamps, and books of the Four Quarters Publishing House on cooperation with UNESCO.

Before the opening ceremony of the exhibition, a minute of silence was declared in memory of Vladimir Shchashny, who headed the National Commission of the Republic of Belarus for UNESCO from 2001 to 2013 and devoted most of his professional activity to the development of cooperation between Belarus and UNESCO.
