Belarus-Georgia relations hailed as vibrant

MINSK, 22 May (BelTA) – Belarus-Georgia relations have been dynamically developing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Belarus Valeri Kvaratskhelia said at a press conference dedicated to the Independence Day of Georgia, BelTA has learned.

According to the ambassador, this year the two countries are celebrating 25 years of diplomatic relations, which is an important milestone for both the states. The diplomat emphasized good contacts between Belarus and Georgia. The official visit of the Belarusian head of state to Tbilisi in March 2018 testifies to the fact. According to Valeri Kvaratskhelia, nearly 40 bilateral documents signed during the visit are under implementation and have been promoting mutual trade.  

The diplomat stated, however, that the Belarusian-Georgian trade is not high enough. In 2018, it totaled about $87 million. In Q1 2019, the mutual trade went up by 10% year-on-year. The ambassador believes that there is every opportunity to increase the figures. He added that the two countries would need to work on the logistics of mutual merchandise supplies. Prices largely depend on this factor. “If we have good prices, the trade turnover will go up,” the ambassador said.

Valeri Kvaratskhelia said that the two countries are looking into new areas of cooperation. These are, first of all, woodworking industry, pharmaceutics and healthcare. The two states have established an exchange of the best healthcare practices. Georgian people often travel to Belarus for surgeries, transplantology services. He added that the joint production of goods for the delivery, including to third markets, is a promising area of economic cooperation between Georgia and Belarus.
