MINSK, 1 October (BelTA) – The divergence between the world’s biggest countries has reached a critical point, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said as he took part in the general debate of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly on 1 October, BelTA has learned.

“The divergence in the relations between some of the world’s biggest nations has reached a critical point. The situation gets totally absurd sometimes. The UN key agencies, first of all the Security Council, turn into an arena for clashes and political self-assertion where confrontation prevails over a dialogue and geopolitical ambitions win over common sense,” Vladimir Makei noted.

He stated that the world is facing unprecedented challenges and threats today. Confrontation in international relations threatens to spiral into a new cold war. “More and more people are concerned about a possibility of using weapons of mass destruction, even though in the course of an unintended conflict or an accident. This attests to the crisis of diplomacy and seriously threatens the UN authority as a major international organization designed to prevent international conflicts,” the minister said.

“Neither I nor many people in this hall have a ready-made recipe for rectifying this situation. However, we are strongly convinced that there is no other way but to build the global order on the basis of common values. It is absolutely obvious that common values cannot emerge from coercion to democracy and violent actions to undermine legitimate authorities,” the diplomat noted.
