MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – Bringing forward the election date is not in violation of the Constitution, BelTA learned from Chairwoman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Belarus Lidia Yermoshina on 16 January.
When asked about the possibility of holding one of the election campaigns due in 2020 at the end of 2019, Lidia Yermoshina said: “Moving the election day does not violate the Constitution. Holding the election past after the deadline does violate the Constitution. This scenario is only possible in the case of a war or a state of emergency.”
The election day is set on the basis of expediency. In India, for example, the electoral calendar is drawn up taking into account the rainy season. Any state should take into account all other reasons. They may include the state of economic and social affairs, other election campaigns, political sentiments, Lidia Yermoshina noted.
According to the calendar of elections and referendums published on the website of the Central Election Commission, the presidential election in 2020 must be held not later than 30 August, the elections to the House of Representatives not later than 10 September, the elections to the Council of the Republic not later than 11 September.
