Belarus calls on UNDP for wider cooperation with regional economic integration organizations

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – At a high-level meeting on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Development Program a delegation of Belarus called on the UNDP to pay more attention to cooperation with regional integration organizations, BelTA learnt from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the light of increasing economic integration processes Belarus expressed confidence that the Belarusian initiative “integration of integrations” will become an example of mutually beneficial cooperation in the Eurasian region.

“In this regard, the delegation of Belarus called upon the UNDP to pay more attention to cooperation with regional integration organizations and to facilitate a dialogue between them,” the press service said.

In its statement the delegation of Belarus noted that the UNDP plays the key coordinating role in the UN development system and highlighted the most important common achievements and spheres of cooperation. Among the most important of them is the coordination of international Chernobyl cooperation.

The statement of Belarus also emphasizes the importance of solving specific problems of middle-income countries without which it is impossible to achieve the sustainable development goals, the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed. Middle-income countries (where more than half of the world's population lives) is the only significant category of the UN member states that does not have a UN system-wide coordinated mechanism for development cooperation.

The meeting to mark the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Development Program was held at the UN headquarters in New York on 24 February. The delegation of Belarus was headed by Andrei Dapkiunas, Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations.
