MINSK, 25 September (BelTA) – Belarus upholds efforts to promote efficient partner relations between the United Nations Organization and regional and subregional organizations with a view to maintaining international peace, security and stability, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei said as he spoke at the UN Security Council ministerial-level debate on cooperation between the UN and regional and subregional organizations, focusing on the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in countering threats to peace and security, with a special focus on counter-terrorism efforts, BelTA has learned.
“This is a demand of today, a condition for maintaining sustainable development of countries and peoples and creating safe conditions for progress and prosperity,” the Belarusian minister noted.
Vladimir Makei commented on the initiative to hold the discussion at the UN Security Council on cooperation with the three regional organizations: the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Collective Security Treaty Organization. He called this initiative important and well-timed. “It is necessary to view this matter through the prism of maintaining international peace and security, in particular in the context of fight against terrorism,” he is convinced.
Vladimir Makei underlined that Belarus is a member of the CSTO and the CIS and has an observer status in the SCO. “We think highly of the potential of these organizations and make our contribution to their effective operation. It is important to note that during the previous session, the UN General Assembly unanimously passed three resolutions related to cooperation with the CIS, the CSTO and the SCO. This is a testimony to broad recognition of the contribution of these regional organizations to maintaining peace and security and attests to their important international role. We welcome the signing of the memorandum of cooperation and interaction between the CSTO Secretariat and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism in November 2018,” he said.
Vladimir Makei is convinced that efficient fight against terrorism is impossible without resolute and coordinated actions of all stakeholders and close coordination of efforts of international and regional organizations under the auspices of the United Nations.
