MINSK, 14 March (BelTA) – China’s position regarding the sanctions imposed on Belarus by Western countries remains unchanged. China condemns this kind of pressure on Belarus, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Xie Xiaoyong said on 14 March, BelTA has learned.
“As far as the sanctions imposed by Western countries against Belarus are concerned, we have a very clear position: we oppose these unjustified sanctions. I think that it is necessary to observe the basic principles of the UN Charter and the norms of international law,” the ambassador stressed.
He drew attention to the difficult situation in the global economy that was caused, among other things, by the pandemic. Yet, despite this, the China-Belarus cooperation maintains a very good momentum. The ambassador cited some statistics to illustrate his point. According to China’s estimates, in 2021 the bilateral trade exceeded $3.8 billion, up by 27.3% over 2020. “The most striking figure is your agricultural exports to China, which was up 44% year-on-year,” Xie Xiaoyong said.
According to Belarusian statistics, in 2021 trade with China reached a record $5.115 billion, an increase of almost 12%, while exports of Belarusian goods grew by 17.5%. This growth was driven mostly by the supply of beef, timber, poultry meat, milk and cream, and cellulose.
The ambassador also mentioned effective cooperation between China and Belarus within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, the successful operation of the China-Belarus Industrial Park Great Stone where 85 resident companies from 15 countries have already registered with a declared investment of more than $1.27 billion. “All these facts show that China and Belarus have great potential and great cooperation prospects,” the ambassador added.
