AIPS President impressed with attitude to sports in Belarus

MINSK, 14 September (BelTA) – President of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) Gianni Merlo, who paid his first visit to Belarus in September, was pleasantly impressed with the attitude toward sports in the country. He made the corresponding statement at the AIPS Europe Congress 2015 and the Seminar for the European Media at the National Olympic Committee of Belarus on 12 September, BelTA has learned.

According to Gianni Merlo, it was his first visit to Belarus and he was greatly impressed by the building of the National Olympic Committee and the Belarusian sport facilities. “I am sincerely grateful to the National Olympic Commission and the Belarusian Sports Press Association for hosting the congress. We are going to discuss a lot of issues. One of them is the fight against the manipulation of sports results. Unfortunately, it is a serious problem which concerns every sports journalist. I can say that it is only with the support of the governments of the countries we can handle it,” said the AIPS President.

Gianni Merlo was elected AIPS President in May 2005. The organization unites 153 national associations. AIPS acts as a mediator between the international press, athletes and sponsors, organizes seminars for beginning journalists. The AIPS comprises continental associations, including the European Union of Sports Press which congress was held in Minsk on 11-13 September 2015.
