MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) – Vera Lapko of Belarus, ranked 533rd in the world, saw off Sara Tomic of Australia (World No.452) 6-2, 6-3 to secure her first final berth in the Australian Open Junior Championships, BelTA informs.
Earlier, the Belarusian beat Michaela Haet of Australia 6-1, 6-4, Jia Ren of China 6-1, 6-4, Japan’s Chihiro Muramatsu (World No.890) 6-2, 6-3, and Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya (World No.597) 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.
In the final showdown the 17-year-old Belarusian will play against Slovak’s world No. 563 Tereza Mihalikova.
After the Australian Open competitions are over, Vera Lapko will join the Belarusian national team ahead of an away match of the first round of the 2016 Federation Cup World Group II against Canada. Apart from her, the team will comprise Victoria Azarenka, Olga Govortsova and Alexandra Sasnovich. The matches will take place in Quebec, Canada on 6-7 February.
