MINSK, 29 August (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 18 Victoria Azarenka went off to a good start at the US Open in New York with a solid win over world number 190 Fiona Ferro of France, 6-1, 6-2, in an hour and 15 minutes, BelTA has learned.
Belarus’ world number 92 Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to Poland’s world number 24 Magda Linette, 3-6, 1-6. In the women’s doubles opener Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova will take on Indonesia’s Aldira Sudjuadi and Miyu Kato of Japan.
Belarus’ world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka will play world number 112 Maryna Zanevska of Belgium.
In the women’s doubles opener Belarus’ Lidziya Marozava and Brazil’s Ingrid Martins will face Russia’s Anastasia Potapova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States. Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich and Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia will play Desirae Krawczyk of the United States and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands.
In the men’s singles event Belarus’ world number 103 Ilya Ivashka lost to world number 93 Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina in five sets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 3-6, 3-6.
The main draw matches will be played on the Flushing Meadows courts from 28 August to 10 September. The total prize money for this year’s US Open is $65 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles will earn $3 million each. Last year the US Open was won by Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
