MINSK, 28 August (BelTA) – The 143rd edition of the US Open is set to kick off in New York on 28 August. Six representatives of Belarus will play in the Grand Slam last event of the season, BelTA has learned.
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 18 will open against world number 190 Fiona Ferro of France. Belarus’ world number 92 Aliaksandra Sasnovich will take on Poland’s world number 24 Magda Linette. Belarus’ world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka will play world number 112 Maryna Zanevska of Belgium.
In the women’s doubles opener Belarus’ Lidziya Marozava and Brazil’s Ingrid Martins will face Russia’s Anastasia Potapova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States. Belarus’ Iryna Shymanovich and Oksana Kalashnikova of Georgia will play Desirae Krawczyk of the United States and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands.
In the men’s singles event Belarus’ world number 103 Ilya Ivashka will take on world number 93 Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina.
The main draw matches will be played on the Flushing Meadows courts from 28 August to 10 September. The total prize money for this year’s US Open is $65 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles will earn $3 million each. Last year the US Open was won by Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
