Serbia hails Belarus’ contribution to development of Slavic languages

MINSK, 22 August (BelTA) – Serbia values the contribution of Belarusian scientists to the development of Slavic languages. The statement was made during a meeting between Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Serbia Valery Brylev and Belgrade Vice Mayor Andreja Mladenovic and Dean of the Philology Department of the University of Belgrade Professor Ljiljana Markovic, BelTA learned from the Belarusian embassy in Belgrade.

Taking part in the meeting was also Chairman of the Belarusian Committee of Slavists, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Alexander Lukashanets. The parties hailed the contribution of Belarusian scientists to the strengthening of the Slavic unity, the development of Slavic languages and the expansion of the culturological dialogue.

The meeting took place as part of the 16th International Congress of Slavists in Belgrade. Attending the opening ceremony were national delegations of researchers from 40 countries, representatives of the Serbian government and Belgrade City Hall, the scientific community and public organizations, the clergy and diplomats.

The International Congress of Slavists is the biggest scientific forum dedicated to the development of Slavic languages, literatures, cultures. Such events are held once in every five years in the capitals of Slavic states. The first congress took place in 1929. The previous, 15th, congress of Slavists was held in Minsk in 2013.
