MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number two Aryna Sabalenka will face Poland’s world number one Iga Swiatek in the Mutua Madrid Open final, BelTA has learned.
In the semifinals Aryna Sabalenka saw off Greece’s world number 9 Maria Sakkari, 6-4, 6-1, while Iga Swiatek cruised past Russia’s world number 13 Veronika Kudermetova, 6-1, 6-1.
World No.1 Iga Swiatek and World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka will face each other in the final for the second straight tournament. In late April Aryna Sabalenka lost to Iga Swiatek, 3-6, 4-6, in the Stuttgart final.
The two rivals are set for their eighth meeting, with Swiatek leading their head-to-head 5-2.
In the doubles semifinal Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka and Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia will take on Taylor Townsend of the United States and Canada’s Leylah Fernandez.
In the men’s semifinals Spain’s world number two Carlos Alcaraz will play world number 20 Borna Coric of Croatia, and Germany’s world number 65 Jan-Lennard Struff will take on Russia’s world number 121 Aslan Karantsev.
The tournament in Madrid will be over on 7 May.
