MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 6 Aryna Sabalenka has reached the US Open semifinal for the second time in a row, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian saw off world number 22 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal.
Next up for Aryna Sabalenka is Poland’s world number 1 Iga Swiatek who knocked off world number 8 Jessica Pegula of the United States to reach the final four. The other semifinal will feature France’s world number 17 Caroline Garcia and world number 5 Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.
Aryna Sabalenka lost to Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the last year’s US Open semifinal.
Russia’s world number 31 Karen Khachanov battled through Australia’s world number 25 Nick Kyrgios, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, to reach his first US Open semifinal. The Russian will face Norway’s world number 7 Casper Ruud for a spot in the final. The other semifinal pair will be known later.
The U.S. Open is set to have a record-setting total prize of $60 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles events will earn $2.6 million each, finalists - $1.3 million. The final Grand Slam event of the year will be over on 11 September.
