MINSK, 17 February (BelTA) – Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens of Belgium have advanced to the Australian Open doubles final, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian-Belgian duo saw of the American-Dutch tandem of Nicole Melichar and Demi Schuurs 7-5, 6-4 in the semifinal. Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens will face the Czech duo of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. This is going to be the second doubles final of the Grand Slam for the Belarusian-Belgian team. In 2019 they won the Australian Open doubles event.
In the Australian Open singles event world number 27 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic advanced to her first major semifinal after stunning World No.1 Ashleigh Barty, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal. The Czech will face US Open semifinalist Jennifer Brady (World No.24) on Thursday. The second semifinal will feature seven-time winner of the Australian Open Serena Williams of the United States (World No.11) and Japan’s world number 3 Naomi Osaka.
The men’s single quarterfinal will see Russian players Daniil Medvedev (World No.4) and Andrei Rublev (8) facing each other. World number 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain battled Greece’s world number 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas for the semifinal berth. The second semifinal will feature Ausralian Open reigning champion, world number one Novak Djokovic and Russia’s world number 114 Aslan Karatsev.
In the Phillip Island Trophy doubles quarterfinal the Belarusian duo of Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Vera Lapko will take on the Indian-Russian tandem of Ankita Raina and Kamilla Rakhimova.
