MINSK, 2 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number two Aryna Sabalenka will face Egypt's world number 59 Mayar Sherif for a spot in the Mutua Madrid Open semifinal, BelTA has learned.
It will be their first WTA meeting. If Aryna Sabalenka wins, she will take on either world number 9 Maria Sakkari of Greece or world number 35 Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania in the next round.
On her way to the quarterfinal the Belarusian avenged her Miami loss to world number 44 Sorana Cirstea of Romania, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round and then eased past Colombia’s world number 115 Camila Osorio, 6-4, 7-5, and Russia’s world number 194 Mirra Andreeva, 6-3, 6-1. Aryna Sabalenka won the tournament in 2021.
This year the tournament in Madrid will be over on 7 May.
