MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – Belarus’ world number 2 Aryna Sabalenka needed an hour and 15 minutes to rout World No.7 Zheng Qinwen of China, 6-1, 6-2 and reach the US Open semifinal, BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will face World No.13 Emma Navarro of the United States for a spot in the final. On her way to this year’s US Open semifinal Aryna Sabalenka secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Australian world number 203 Priscilla Hon in the opener, then defeated Italy’s world number 76 Lucia Bronzetti, Russia’s world number 31 Ekaterina Alexandrova, and world number 35 Elise Mertens of Belgium.
Coco Gauff of the United States defeated Aryna Sabalenka to raise the women’s trophy last year. This time Coco Gauff lost to Emma Navarro in the round of Last 16.
In the other quarterfinals World No.6 Jessica Pegula toppled World No.1 Iga Swiatek, 6-2, 6-4, and World No.52 Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic booked her place in the semifinal with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of World No.22 Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.
The total prize money pool for 2024 stands at $75,000,000, with winners in the men’s and women’s events earning $3.6 million each. Novak Djokovic of Serbia won the last year’s edition beating Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the men’s final.
