MINSK, 31 August (BelTA) – Two Belarusian tennis players went off to a good start at the US Open in New York on 30 August, BelTA has learned.
World number 2 Aryna Sabalenka needed three sets to defeat Serbia's world number 94 Nina Stojanovic, bouncing back to win 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-0.
World number 19 Victoria Azarenka moved into the second round after taking down World No.60 Tereza Martincova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-0.
Belarus’ world number 90 Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to Kazakhstan’s World No.20 Elena Rybakina, 2-6, 3-6, in the opening round.
Belarus’ world number 53 Ilya Ivashka will open the event against world number 91 Tennys Sandgren of the United States. Belarus’ world number 82 Egor Gerasimov will start his campaign against Poland’s world number 13 Hubert Hurkacz.
The US Open 2021 prize money is $57.5 million. Winners in the men’s and women’s singles events will earn $2.5 million each. The competitions will complete on 12 September. Dominic Thiem of Austria and Naomi Osaka of Japan were US Open champions last year.
