MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) – Belarusian tennis players have made a successful start at the ongoing US Open in New York, BelTA has learned.
Belarus’ World No.2 Aryna Sabalenka secured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Australian world number 203 Priscilla Hon in the opener. The Belarusian will face Italy's world number 76 Lucia Bronzetti in the second round. In the 2023 US Open final Aryna Sabalenka lost to Coco Gauff of the United States.
Earlier, Belarus’ world number 20 Victoria Azarenka saw off Ukraine’s world number 146 Yulia Starodubtsewa, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Victoria Azarenka will next play world number 56 Clara Burel of France.
Belarus’ world number 107 Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who made it into the main draw through qualifying, will face world number 33 Katie Boutler on Tuesday.
The total prize money pool for 2024 stands at $75,000,000, with winners in the men’s and women’s events earning $3.6 million each.
