GRDONO, 4 July (BelTA) - Runners from 12 countries have registered to take part in the 2016 edition of the Grodno-Druskininkai marathon on 10 July, deputy head of the sport and tourism department of the Grodno Oblast Executive Committee Andrei Boisha told BelTA.
It is the only in Europe cross-border marathon. The race which is 42km 195m long spans the territory of Lithuania and Belarus. “Applications for participation have been filed by representatives of 12 countries. The list may become longer as the registration closes on 7 July. From year to year, country representation grows. Many athletes are willing to add this unique marathon to the list of their achievements,” Andrei Boisha said.
According to the latest data, more than 150 runners have already registered. They are from Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, the UK, Estonia, Qatar, Hungary, Norway and France.
“Men and women will compete in four age categories: 18-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 years and older. Time limit is 6 hours,” Andrei Boisha said.
This year the marathon ends on the Belarusian side. The runners will cross the border at the Privalka checkpoint. Customs formalities will be done at the staring and finish points.
